Cannot Scroll Up In Google Chrome Bug

Google Chrome Logo So, if you are using the most current Dev build of the Chrome Browser… Note that you may not be able to scroll UP the page with your mouse. Its a bug that was introduced to the this mornings update (12/10/2010). You can install the general release and all will be well again. Then flip back to the dev build once they release an update to the Dev Channel.

Update: Google pushed an update this morning to fix the scroll bug in the dev channel. (12/11/2010)

Today Google released Chrome 8 in the Dev Channel. The Mac version didn’t seem to get the Google Instant Omnibar feature by default. Never fear, here is how you add the feature…

How To Enable Chrome Instant In The Omnibar – Mac Version

First you need to make certain you are running the Dev Build of Chrome. **Warning: Think of this as an Alpha Version, and be caution as its a pre-beta build – i.e lots of bugs may be present** You have been warned.

Lets install the Chrome Dev Build First… (Skip if you are already on the dev channel)
1. I suggest backing up your Default profile for Google, this will enable you to downgrade to a more stable version later. Navigate to:
~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome

2. Zip/Compress the “Default” directory and save it somewhere safe.

3. Download & Install the Dev Channel Build of Chrome here.

4. Open Chrome and navigate to:
about:labs

5. Enable one of the experimental features.

6. Quit Chrome

7. Open Finder and navigate to:
~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default

8. Open the “Preferences” file with a text editor (TextEdit/TextMate etc)

9. Find:
"enabled_labs_experiments": [

10. Add:
"match-preview",

For reference mine looks like this:
"enabled_labs_experiments": [ "expose-for-tabs", "match-preview",

11. Save the file, and relaunch Chrome.

Congrats your Omnibar now accesses Google Instant.

FYI, if you find that the Google Instant feature drives you bananas… Just do the same thing, but remove the “match-preview”, from the preference file.

How to Follow iPhone Developers on Twitter with Ruby

How to Follow iPhone Developers on Twitter with Ruby

This requires using a Ruby on Rails script. I do not take credit for the script as it was created by David Clements. Currently there are approximately 1000 users listed on the spreadsheet. Understand this will cause to to start following 1000+ people very quickly with this script.

A word of caution – Twitter has a follow / unfollow ratio that can suspend your acct if you follow too many people very quickly. So I would recommend using some caution with this script.

Requirements:

1. Ruby on Rails
2. Google Acct
3. Twitter Acct
4. Understanding of Terminal
5. The Ruby Script – Ruby Script – please note I made a few simple modifications to the script.

How to:

1. Open Terminal.

2. Update Ruby Gems on your local machine.
in terminal type: sudo gem update --system

3. Install the twitter gem (this is required to interact with twitter.com). I recommend installing an older version as the newest doesn’t work well with the ruby script.
in terminal type: sudo gem install twitter -v 0.4.1

4. Add the google spreadsheet gem source.
in terminal type: sudo gem sources -a http://gems.github.com

5. Install the google spreadsheet gem.
in terminal type: sudo gem install gimite-google-spreadsheet-ruby

6. UnZip & Open the Ruby Script in a text editor. You will need to enter your username and pass for both google and twitter. The user info is safe so no worries about entering it. Also note the instructions I added on line 27, 28, 29 of the script. If you prefer you can change it from 50 to a lower number, but I don’t recommend anything higher.

7. Save the file

8. In terminal navigate to the script (mines on my desktop)…
in terminal type: ruby follow_iphone_devs.rb

It will take about 30 seconds or so before anything happens, as the script has to access the spreadsheet and login to twitter. Then one by one it will start following the users shown on the spreadsheet.

360iDev conference

360|iDev conference

the 360|iDev conference will be upon us shortly. it’s a developers conference for iphone applications. this year it will be hosted at ebay’s headquarters in san jos, ca — should be a really nice event 8). looks to be a nice smaller sized conference. hopefully i can garner a lot of new tasty tidbits of knowledge from it. i look forward to meeting other like minded people and start developing some friendships with other attendees.
