Hendrick’s Gin… ever hear of it? you might have seen the bottle once or twice on the shelf at a retailer. if you are like me [bourbon/whiskey/scotch drinker] you most likely don’t mess with gins. well, one day while at a local retailer i noticed the bottle. the bottle spoke to me. no no – not literally – it was sitting there short and squat. looking like something pulled off a pirate ship. i was drawn to the design. the simplicity. i picked it up, glanced down and noticed a little pamphlet attached which read “”Preferred by 1 out of 1000 gin drinkers” and “It is not for everybody” and my personal favorite “loved by a tiny handful of people all over the world”. wow. it now was something i had to try – mostly because i am not normal, and i must be one of those “1’s”.
so there i stood, trying to think about the last time i drank gin. i couldn’t remember, oh wait now i remember… pine-sol. i always equated the stuff to a floor cleaner. but wait… it said “Preferred by 1 out of 1000 gin drinkers”. maybe that was the defining moment… most gin in my opinion reminded me of that beloved floor cleaner. this had to be different.
fast forward thirty minutes later…
i arrive home, it’s the weekend… and my mind races in anticipation of what is to come. i pop the top, and low and behold it’s a cork – a real cork. cautiously i await that familiar scent. but to my excitement i get a waft of whats smells like citrus / floral and juniper. no pine smell! joy of joys i didn’t just blow $30 on floor cleaner.
i drop a couple of ice cubes in a nice clean rocks glass, pour a single and top it off with some fresh tonic water… garnish with a cucumber [believe it or not this stuff is made from the essence of cucumbers and rose petals, and they recommend that a gin and tonic made with Hendrick’s Gin is garnished with a seedless cucumber slice]. i take a sip, and instantly i am aware of how different this stuff really is. there is no bite, there is no pain, no wince. there is however a lot of flavors one must savor. now here is the funny part. my wife doesn’t really like any type of liquor, so i call her over and ask her to take a sip… and she too finds it very enjoyable and refreshing. something she says she would actually drink. if you knew my wife you would know thats saying something.
for the past few months, i have gone through two bottles of Hendrick’s Gin. i have not once grabbed a scotch or bourbon. that is rather impressive fact as far as i am concerned. so, if you are looking for something different. try this small batch gin from Scotland – Hendrick’s Gin
it puts a smile on my face every time i have some.
