i just migrated over from microsoft entourage 2008 to apple mail. i never had issues sending from entourage, but in apple mail I couldn’t send. so i fiddled with the settings and i was able to determine the following.
In Entourage – i just used my username (for example “jdoe”) for connecting to the mail.bellsouth.net and it worked perfectly in entourage
not so in apple mail
In Apple Mail – i thought instead of just having “jdoe” as the user, i should try using “[email protected]” and it worked!
so for some unknown reason, when connecting to bellsouth (mail.bellsouth.net), apple mail needs your complete email address.

Thank you withoutink. I left a reply at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7124387
for you. This has been the most frustrating issue I’ve had in years and it was such an easy fix. Someone needs to call Bellsouth and tell them fools to log this simple fix in their database.
Thanks again because I was about to finally just remove Entourage and I really didn’t want to do that.
Jesse
glad to see it worked for you =)
I have a problem with Bellsouth too, with my new IMAC. I’m ready to switch to Comcast as I understand the same problem does not exist there. I’m tired of my emails bouncing back.
I’ll try what you did. Thanks.
